Drug Uses

Zyprexa is approved for the management of various conditions such as:

  • diabetes mellitus (sugar-like episodes), and chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • epilepsy and multiple sclerosis (manic and depressive episodes)
  • multiple sclerosis.
  • Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.
  • rheumatoid arthritis.
  • chronic pain syndrome and neuropathic pain.
  • prostate and prostate cancers.
  • pulmonary oedema.
  • epilepsy and diabetic foot.

Precautions

The drug should be used with caution in patients with a history of diabetes mellitus or a family history of diabetic neuropathy. ZYPREXA should not be used in the following cases:

  • diabetes; or
  • diabetes associated with other diseases. These include:
  • multiple sclerosis, nerve-sparing drugs for cancer or nerve problems
  • nerve disease; or
  • kidney disease.

Drug Interactions

The drug should be used with caution in patients with a history of diabetes mellitus, and patients with a family history of diabetic neuropathy. ZYPREXA may increase the blood sugar levels in these patients. ZYPREXA is not recommended for use with other antidiabetic medications.

Some antidiabetic agents may cause serious side effects in elderly patients. Elderly patients may be at higher risk for such side effects of antidiabetic agents. Therefore, precautions should be taken to avoid elderly patients from taking antidiabetic agents. Elderly patients are at higher risk of developing antidiabetic agents (see section 4.5).

In general, the following antidiabetic agents are used at higher doses:

  • glimepiride (Ozempic®, Glucotrol®), a drug used to treat high blood pressure in the body.
  • metformin (Actonel®), a drug used to treat high blood sugar in patients with diabetes, such as type 2 diabetes or type 1 diabetes mellitus.
  • metformin (Ozempic®, Glucotrol®), a drug used to treat high blood sugar in patients with diabetes.

Zyprexa® is a drug to treat psychotic or bipolar disorder. It can also be used to lower your risk of having a head injury when you first start treatment. Zyprexa is used to treat both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Zyprexa is also an antipsychotic that may be used off-label to treat depression and other mental illnesses. It works by blocking certain receptors in the brain to help you manage your symptoms and control your mental health.

Zyprexa is also used to treat the symptoms of depression and anxiety disorder. Zyprexa may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

What are the side effects of Zyprexa?
